Super Meat Boy didn’t invent the masocore platformer, but it certainly helped popularise it. A bloody chunk of meat makes for a surprisingly charming hero, it turns out, while its precise controls, inventive level design, and instant respawns made a captivating experience out of what might otherwise have been a frustrating one. Its long-awaited sequel, Super Meat Boy Forever, moves in a very different direction, but different is always a bad thing—its full of new ideas that cut right to the heart of the “one more try!” impulse at the heart of this genre. Even the most die-hard of players will eventually give in when you have to spend five minutes retracing your steps, however, in Meat Boy, you instead spend about five seconds doing it. This short level length is one of Meat Boy’s biggest advantages over other similar games.

On its surface, Super Meat Boy Forever shares much of its identity with the 2010 original. The graphics and music are nearly identical, which is a very good thing. The cartoonish visuals are simple, yet visually stunning and give off a very Saturday morning cartoon-like feel to them (albeit much more violent and gruesome). The art style almost has a Newgrounds flash game-type vibe to it, which isn't a bad thing. And speaking of cartoon visuals, Forever's cut scenes are some of the biggest stand-outs.
